When Michelle Hollaender was visiting her mother in Guatemala on one of her trips home, a katydid, known in Guatemala as an Esperanza,  landed on her shoulder. Katydids are small, green insects believed to be symbolic of hope. It was at that moment that Michelle decided to name her organization Esperanza.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. This designation reflects leading excellence in laboratory, clinical and survivorship research, as well as leadership in education and community outreach.

The Valentine Project is a charitable organization that works to support children whose lives are affected by cancer or chronic illness. The volunteer-driven organization sends one-of-a-kind Valentines filled with love, hope, and joy across the miles to kids in California, Kentucky, and Ohio.
