- Callestemon or Bottlebrush Trees are a species of a few hundred different species and selected cultivars that produce unusual flowers, mostly red, that are shaped like a full, fluffy bottlebrush.
- Red Cluster or Clemson Bottlebrush is a quick, upright, bushy-growing selected cultivar of Callestemon rigidus that generally matures into a large multi-stemmed tree-like bush at about 12 to 15 feet tall. It is a great choice for property and boundary hedges, privacy screens, or small urban lots. Birds and pollinators, including hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, are attracted to the bright red color and nectar, making it a good fit for habitat gardens.
- Care: This is a low-maintenance plant that requires little pruning once established. Plant in fertile, well-draining soil in a location that receives 6 to 8 hours of bright, direct sunlight daily. Adequate irrigation is essential to maintain soil moisture. Feed a high-quality, bloom-boosting fertilizer annually in the spring. Prune after flowering to maintain uniform size and shape.
- Indoor: This tree is frequent choice for indoor Bonsai culture by experienced growers. However, the plant is not a good candidate for indoor growing generally. It requires a significant amount of direct sunlight and space that cannot be provided in a typical indoor environment. It is best enjoyed as an outdoor specimen.
- Climate: A semi-tropical tree/shrub that is best suited for outdoor growing in USDA Hardiness Zones 8 through 11.
